Five things to make you safe online

The risks of being affected by a virus or attacked by a hacker can be drastically reduced if you adopt a sensible approach to your computer use. Here is a list of five simple steps that any computer user can take to ensure that they stay as safe as possible while using the Internet.

Number One – Stay Alert! Never accept a pop-up window just to clear your screen. Clicking on some pop-ups may trigger viruses, worms or Trojan Horses which can thereafter continue to wreak havoc in your system – even after you have shut down. If you suspect your desktop has been contaminated run an antivirus software scan.

Number Two – Always empty your memory cache. Stored passwords, be it Gmail, facebook or your personal banking site, are encrypted, however, so are viruses. Also never send this kind of private data via email, and if you must, do so in several emails. In social networking avoid explaining your whereabouts and your possessions.

Number Three – When shopping online, do not give any card details unless you see a genuine padlock in the lower right corner of your browser. Similarly never divulge your social security number. On online banking sites beware requests for full passwords or pin codes. Genuine online banking usually asks for elements, unless you have a separate paying device.

Number Four – Install the right type of antivirus software for your needs. Avoid overcrowding your system with too many types of antivirus deterrents. Concentrate on one essential security programme and scan your computer regularly. Get a Firewall, if you do not already have one, and keep passwords complicated and secret.

Number Five – If you are worried about your children accessing damaging content enable child safety options on your desktop. Avoid being too restrictive about the internet to your child. Introduce it by test browsing and showing what they can do instead of what they cannot. If you see something unpleasant contact your internet service provider.
